I think most people have a special place where they like to go to reflect and collect their thoughts: a place where for a while time stands still. For myself, I find peace of mind in the woods near my home. The woods are beautiful in all seasons but I especially love them on windy days. The rustle of the wind in the trees is for me the best meditation  music ever. 

Penso che ognuno di noi abbia un luogo speciale in cui poter riflettere e raccogliere i pensieri nei momenti difficili: un posto dove per un po’ il tempo si ferma. Il mio “posto” è il bosco che mi affascina in tutte le stagioni e in particolar modo nelle giornate ventose. Per me il fruscio del vento tra le fronde degli alberi è musica che invita alla riflessione e alla meditazione.  

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Pieve is another place that gives me a lot of peace and serenity, a little green oasis in the midst of the factories and the busy streets of Chiampo, a town rich in basalt and marble quarries, about 20 km due west of Vicenza.

At the Sanctuary, officiated by Franciscan friars, one can gather in prayer before the statue of the Immaculate Conception, carved by the excellent sculptor Brother Claudio Granzotto. The statue, made ​​of Carrara marble, stands in a niche within  the "Lourdes Grotto", also built by Brother Claudio, which is the perfectly faithful replica of the grotto in Massabielle, France. During the construction of the grotto Brother Claudio prophesied: "This grotto will become a place of prayer and many people will come ..." In fact, in recent decades a great religious Marian Movement has developed and currently the annual flow is around a million pilgrims. At the foot of the grotto is the tomb of the Blessed Claudio, who died on August 15, 1947 and promised "From heaven I will help and comfort you all." Brother Claudio was beatified by Pope John Paul II on  November 20, 1994 and is currently being considered for sainthood as several miracles have been attributed to him.

Il Santuario di Santa Maria della Pieve è un altro luogo che mi trasmette molta pace e serenità; una piccola oasi in mezzo alle fabbriche e alle strade trafficate di Chiampo, un paese ricco di basalti e di banchi di marmo a circa 20 km da Vicenza, in direzione ovest.

Presso il Santuario, officiato dai Frati Minori Francescani, ci si può raccogliere in preghiera davanti alla statua dell’Immacolata, scolpita dallo scultore di marmo Fra Claudio Granzotto. La statua, in marmo di Carrara, si trova in una nicchia della “Grotta di Lourdes”, anche questa costruita da Fra Claudio ed inaugurata e benedetta nel 1935. Fra Claudio, il cui vero nome era Riccardo Granzotto, costruì la grotta perfettamente fedele a quella di Massabielle in Francia.  Durante la costruzione della grotta Fra Claudio profetizzò: “Questa grotta diventerà un luogo di preghiera e qui verrà tanta gente…” Infatti, in questi ultimi decenni attorno alla grotta si è sviluppato un grande movimento religioso-Mariano che oggi raggiunge un flusso annuale di  quasi un milione di pellegrini.

Ai piedi della grotta si trova la tomba del Beato Claudio che morì il 15 agosto 1947 e che promise “Dal cielo aiuterò e consolerò tutti”. Fra Claudio fu proclamato Beato da Papa Giovanni Paolo II il 20 novembre 1994 ed ora è in atto il processo di canonizzazione dato che gli sono stati attribuiti alcuni miracoli. 

A new church, built in response to the increasing number of pilgrims,  is nearing completion. The church has the shape of a shell, a widespread fossil  in the valley of Chiampo. The interior is absolutely amazing. The large stained glass windows that cover more than half of the perimeter of the church let the light shine through making the church-inside warm and bright. The main altar and two side altars are decorated with mosaics that enchant with their beauty. A really must see!

Vicino alla grotta sta per essere ultimata la nuova chiesa costruita per rispondere al sempre maggior afflusso di pellegrini. La chiesa ha la forma di una conchiglia, fossile molto diffuso nella vallata del Chiampo. L’interno della chiesa è assolutamente stupefacente. Le ampie vetrate colorate che coprono oltre la metà del perimetro della chiesa lasciano filtrare la luce rendendo l’ambiente caldo e luminoso. L’altare maggiore e i due altari laterali sono impreziositi da mosaici  che incantano per la loro bellezza. Veramente una cosa da vedere!

In the vicinity of the grotto  is the museum that houses a rich and original collection of  the plaster reproductions of the works of the Blessed Claudio.

Also nearby is the P. Aurelio Menin Museum which contains a valuable collection of shells and fossils together with a collection of paleontology, of mineralogy, and zoology. The museum has a capacity of 1200 sqm. so that a complete and profound visit requires  considerable time.

Presso la gipsoteca che si trova vicino alla grotta potrete ammirare le riproduzioni di gesso dei lavori del Beato Claudio: una raccolta davvero ricca ed originale.

Anche il Museo P.Aurelio Menin, sempre nelle vicinanze, merita una visita. Il museo che comprende 11 sezioni ha una capienza di circa 1200mq. Una visita completa, quindi, richiede molto tempo. Il museo contiene un prezioso patrimonio culturale e presenta una collezione di paleontologia, con moltissimi reperti fossili, arricchita da quelle di mineralogia, zoologia e conchigliologia.

Today is the Epiphany, the 12th day of Christmas that commemorates the visit to the Baby Jesus of the Three Kings, also known as Wise Men.

Traditionally we  celebrate the feast of the Befana, an ugly but kind old witch, who rides a broomstick and fills stockings with sweets and toys left hanging for her by the children on the eve of Epiphany.  

In the early evening, when it is dark, many towns burn a puppet of al old lady (brusare la vecia) for the symbolic purpose of leaving the past behind and welcoming the new year.

Oggi è l’Epifania, la festa dei Re Magi che giungono al cospetto di Gesù con l’aiuto della stella cometa. 

Tradizionalmente da noi il 6 gennaio si festeggia la befana che regala dolciumi ai bambini e …nel pomeriggio “se brusa la vecia!”, per salutare l’anno vecchio e dare il benvenuto a quello nuovo.

A bright star led the Wise Men to Jesus. On the day of Epiphany I usually bake a delicate and delicious cake in the form of a star. 

Ingredients for the “Comet Cake"

250 g plain flour 
100 g butter

200 g caster sugar

3 eggs + salt

250 g ricotta cheese 

100 g dark chocolate chips

15 g baking powder 

Melt the butter in a double boiler and let cool. Beat the eggs, a pinch of salt and sugar until creamy, soft and fluffy. Add the butter and the cheese, mixing thoroughly. Combine the flour and baking powder together and mix everything very well until the mixture is smooth and homogeneous. Add the chocolate chips to the mixture that will be quite substantial and mix well. Grease and flour a star shaped cake pan, or otherwise a normal 26 cm cake pan and pour in the mixture. Bake the cake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees C for 40/45 minutes, placing it in the lower part of the oven. When the cake has cooled, sprinkle the surface with icing sugar.

A proposito di stelle, ecco il mio dolce a forma di stella; un dolce facile, soffice e buonissimo!

Ingredienti per il “Dolce Cometa”

250 g farina 00

100 g burro

200 g zucchero semolato

3 uova  + sale

250 g ricotta

100 g gocce di cioccolato fondente

1 bustina di lievito

Sciogliete il burro a bagnomaria e lasciatelo intiepidire.  Sbattete le uova, un pizzico di sale e lo zucchero  sino ad avere un composto soffice e spumoso. Aggiungete il burro intiepidito  e la ricotta, amalgamando bene il tutto. Unite la farina e il lievito setacciati assieme e mescolate tutto molto bene finché  il composto risulterà liscio ed omogeneo. Versate le gocce di cioccolato all’impasto che sarà piuttosto consistente e mescolate bene. Imburrate e infarinate uno stampo per dolci a forma di stella, o altrimenti uno stampo normale da 26 cm., e versatevi il composto. Infornate il dolce in forno già caldo a 180° per 40/45 minuti, collocandolo nella parta bassa del forno. Quando il dolce si è raffreddato spolverizzate la superficie con zucchero a velo.
