Ding Dong

I've always loved the chiming of church bells which, I think, conveys a sense of peace and serenity. I reside in Arcugnano, a town at about 6 km from Vicenza which spreads out on numerous hills. In the town there are seven hamlets (the chief town Arcugnano and Fimon, Lapio, Perarolo, Pianezze, Torri and Villabalzana) with as many parish churches. On a clear day, therefore, the resonant peals of the church bells rung to signify the time, to call people to worship or for special events such as weddings and funerals, ride the air distinctly.

Amo da sempre il suono delle campane che mi trasmette pace e serenità. Risiedo ad Arcugnano, un comune molto vasto che si sviluppa prevalentemente in zona collinare. Il paese dista circa sei km da Vicenza e conta ben sette frazioni (Arcugnano capoluogo, Fimon, Lapio, Perarolo, Pianezze. Torri e Villabalzana), con altrettante chiese parrocchiali. In una giornata limpida, quindi, il rintocco delle campane delle varie chiese suonate per indicare le ore o per chiamare i fedeli alle celebrazioni liturgiche si percepisce molto bene. 

The Church of St. Justine in Arcugnano 

Arcugnano is a community among the oldest of the Berici Hills. The first news about its church dedicated to Saint Justine date back to 1186, the date of a bull of Pope Urban III. In the early decades of the nineteenth century, namely from 1824 to 1826, the church was rebuilt in neoclassical style, with a single rectangular nave, to cope with the growing population. The bell tower, built between 1838 and 1845, is 45 meters high and has a base of a truncated pyramid, while the stem is quadrangular. On the spire of the tower stands a metal cross with vane showing the acronym "IHS" (Iesus hominum Salvator).

Arcugnano è una comunità tra le più antiche dei Colli Berici. Le prime notizie sulla sua chiesa intitolata a Santa Giustina risalgono al 1186, data di una bolla di papa Urbano III. Nei primi decenni dell’ottocento, e precisamente dal 1824 al 1826, la chiesa fu ricostruita in forma neoclassica, con una unica navata rettangolare, per far fronte all’aumento della popolazione. Il campanile, costruito tra il 1838 e 1845, è alto 45 metri e presenta una base a tronco di piramide, mentre il fusto è quadrangolare. Sulla guglia del campanile svetta una croce in metallo con banderuola che riporta l’acronimo “IHS” (Iesus Hominum Salvator).

The parish of Perarolo has a more recent history. After years of neglect, in 1725, the church dedicated to St. Bernardino of Siena, was rebuilt. The small bell tower located next to the church was probably demolished in the mid-nineteenth century and rebuilt providing it with three large bells in 1879.

La parrocchia di Perarolo ha una storia più recente. Dopo anni di abbandono, nel 1725, la chiesa intitolata a San Bernardino da Siena, venne ricostruita. Il piccolo campanile che si trova accanto alla chiesa venne probabilmente abbattuto verso la metà dell’Ottocento e ricostruito dotandolo di tre grosse campane nel 1879.

As you can see the beautiful Berici Hills surround the small village. All the Berici Hills area is a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers. There are also many agriturismos where one can enjoy the simple and genuine  local cooking. Nearby there is Lake Fimon, a very small but peaceful lake, nestled among the lush  Berici Hills. People go there just to get away from the city which is only 6 km away. It’s a good place to go for a walk or just to sit down and observe ducks, swans and herons.

Il piccolo borgo di Fimon è circondato dai Monti Berici. Tutta la zona  è un  vero paradiso per escursionisti e amanti della mountain bike. Ci sono anche molti agriturismi dove si può gustare la semplice e genuina cucina locale. Nelle vicinanze si trova il Lago di Fimon, una delle principali mete “fuori porta” dei Vicentini. Il lago è un piccolo specchio d’acqua dove si può praticare la pesca al luccio, passeggiare in un’ampia strada sterrata che gira attorno al lago o semplicemente  sedersi sulle sue sponde per osservare anatre, cigni ed aironi.

Agriturismo "Colli Berici"

As I have already mentioned, there are many agriturismos in the area (Agriturismo - a combination of the words for "agriculture" and "tourism" in Italian - is a style of vacationing in farm house resorts).  Near Pianezze there’s the “Colli Berici” Agriturismo which enjoys a prime location; it is in fact surrounded by nature in a beautiful and peaceful green oasis. It 's the ideal place to stay overnight or simply refresh after a day hike in the hills. There’s also the possibility to go horse riding. The kitchen serves simple traditional dishes accompanied by excellent local wines. In Summer guests can dine under a large and refreshing pergola.

Come ho già accennato, nella zona ci sono molti agriturismo. Vicino a Pianezze del Lago segnalo molto volentieri l’Agriturismo “Colli Berici” che gode di una posizione privilegiata; si trova infatti immerso nella natura in una  splendida oasi verde e silenziosa. E’ il posto ideale dove trascorrere una giornata in completo relax magari effettuando una bellissima passeggiata a cavallo oppure ristorarsi dopo un’escursione sui colli. L’agriturismo dispone anche di un servizio B & B per un totale di 12 posto letto. La cucina propone piatti semplici della tradizione contadina vicentina con prodotti di propria produzione accompagnati da ottimi vini locali. Durante la bella stagione gli ospiti possono pranzare sotto una grande e fresca pergola.

Now that the days are cooler I can finally turn on the oven and prepare a delicious cake that I particularly like and that is a cross between a chocolate cake and fudge!

Chocolate Squares for 4/6

200 g dark chocolate

200 g sugar

100 g flour

180 g butter

3 egg yolks

2 eggs

Icing sugar

Melt the chocolate pieces in a double boiler with the butter and two or three tablespoons of water. With a fork, beat the egg yolks with the eggs and a pinch of salt, add the sugar and the cooled melted chocolate, add the flour and mix well. Pour the mixture into a baking pan lined with parchment paper and bake at 180° C for 30/35 minutes. When cooled, cut the cake into squares and sprinkle with icing sugar. For a more delicious result you can spread some melted chocolate on the surface of the cake and sprinkle with grated coconut, then cut the cake into squares.

Ora che le giornate si sono rinfrescate posso finalmente accendere il forno e preparare una torta deliziosa che amo particolarmente e che è una via di mezzo fra un dolce e un cioccolatino!

Quadrotti al cioccolato (di Benedetta Parodi)

Per 4/6 persone

200 g cioccolato fondente

200 g zucchero

100 g farina

180 g burro

3 tuorli

2 uova

Zucchero a velo

Sciogliete a bagno maria il cioccolato a pezzi con il burro e due o tre cucchiai di acqua. Con una forchetta sbattete i tuorli con le uova intere e un pizzico di sale, aggiungete lo zucchero e il cioccolato fuso intiepidito, unite anche la farina e mescolate bene. Versate il composto in una tortiera foderata di carta da forno e cuocete a 180° per 30/35 minuti. Quando raffreddata, tagliata la torta a quadrotti e spolverizzate con zucchero a velo. Per un risultato più sfizioso potete spalmare la superficie della torta con un po’ di cioccolato fuso e spolverizzare con farina di cocco, quindi tagliate il dolce a quadrotti.
